Angel investors fund Libyan e-commerce startup Mataa

Libya-based e-commerce startup Mataa has announced the successful closing of its first Seed investment round, backed by a group of Libyan business angels. This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the company’s mission to transform digital commerce across Libya and the broader North African region.

Founded by Ibrahim Shuwehdi, Mataa has quickly positioned itself as a mobile-first shopping platform tailored to local market needs, offering a wide range of products with express delivery options. With the new funding, the company plans to enhance its operational infrastructure, focusing on first-mile and last-mile logistics, expanding its central warehouse, and onboarding a broader array of suppliers and product categories.

In addition, Mataa will recruit experienced regional talent to support its long-term growth strategy and strengthen its competitive edge in the e-commerce sector. Central to its expansion is a renewed focus on its marketplace model, which enables Libyan merchants to reach over six million internet users nationwide. The platform also integrates seamlessly with Facebook-based sellers, helping them reduce advertising costs and improve conversion rates.

Shuwehdi highlighted that investor confidence in the founding team, coupled with Libya’s strategic location at the heart of a 275 million-person, $830 billion North African market, played a crucial role in securing the investment. More than just a financial boost, this round represents a vote of confidence in Libya’s startup ecosystem, signaling the potential for increased venture capital activity in the country.

Mataa aims to serve as a catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship, paving the way for other Libyan startups to attract funding and scale regionally. As digital commerce continues to surge across North Africa, Mataa is poised to become a key player in shaping the future of online retail and logistics in the region.
