Amazon launches new section dedicated to wearable tech devices

Amazon has announced a new section called the Amazon Wearable Technology for wearable gadgets from all major tech companies and startups.

Wearables might not be common as smartphones, but the future for the new technology is promising. Owing to the growing popularity of wearables, major tech companies such as Google, Samsung, Sony, Nike and several startups including Pebble, have jumped into the arena with their own wearable gadgets. Amazon Inc., the world’s largest online retailer, may not be joining the bandwagon but is participating in the new trend. The retailer announced Tuesday, a new storefront exclusive to wearable technology in a bid to simplify online shopping.

The Amazon Wearable Technology, the name given to the new store, gives users a wide selection of brands, ranging from Samsung, Jawbone and GoPro and also products from startups like Basis and Misfit. Even though the technology has been around for almost a decade, the sudden increase in the device range and participation from leading brands has led to the sudden attraction for consumers. The retailer is also offering help to those who are new to the wearable space through its new Learning Center, which includes product videos, detailed guides, comparisons and suggestions from customers.

“Wearable technology is an exciting category with rapid innovation and our customers are increasingly coming to Amazon to shop and learn about these devices,” John Nemeth, Director of Wireless and Mobile Electronics at Amazon, said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to bring our customers a store with the largest selection and great prices that helps eliminate the guesswork when deciding which wearable devices best fit their needs-whether that is tracking activity, staying connected through smart watches or capturing their next adventure with wearable cameras.”

The wearable tech space has recently expanded its inventory with latest additions from Samsung, which introduced two smartwatches and an activity tracker this month. New entries are expected this year, with companies including Motorola and LG launching their smartwatches this year. Google is also expected to step up its Explorer program for Google Glass by bringing the smart glasses to the public later this year.  Apple has long been in the news for its rumored iWatch but details remain scanty on the availability.

The new category in the tech world has been favorable for some. Pebble received immense success with its smartwatch, which got positive reviews from analysts and customers. Amazon bringing all major and emerging brands under one roof will simplify comparing and purchasing of the right product. Visit the Wearable Technology store here to view all products on offer.
