Startup Launches Limo Service in Doha

Careem, Middle East’s ground transportation technology startup, announced it is officially launching its service in Qatar, following a month of testing.

With this launch, Doha joins the list of cities where people can order a chauffeur-driven private car for hire ‘limo’ through Careem’s website and mobile apps ‘available on iPhone and Android smartphones’.

Careem has been in pilot with large corporates in Doha for the last month.

“We are very excited to bring this innovation to Qatar,” said co-founder Mudassir Sheikha. “This will give the people of Qatar an additional ground transportation option when they cannot find taxis or other forms of public transport,” Mudassir added.

Careem was started in June-2012 by Magnus Olsson and Mudassir Sheikha, both former consultants at McKinsey & Company, and previously technology entrepreneurs in Sweden and Silicon Valley respectively. Since inception, Careem has completed more than 10k trips with an average customer rating of 4.8 (on a scale of 1 to 5).

“Providing a reliable service on top of Middle East’s road infrastructure has been challenging,” said co-founder Magnus Olsson. “We have had to solve problems such as navigation that similar providers in other markets take for granted,” Magnus added. “We are proud to have QatarLiving.com, the popular online platform, known for providing answers about life in Qatar, as our official partner,” Magnus concluded.

The current launch includes a fleet of Economy cars (e.g., Honda Accord) in Doha, driven by professional chauffeurs. These cars can be ordered from Careem’s mobile app on iPhone and Android, from the web at careem.com, or from m.careem.com for Blackberry devices.

Depending on the ride, Careem might not be a lot more expensive than a taxi in Doha.
